Cavalier King Charles Spaniel micromosaic snuff box

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel micromosaic snuff box

€0.00

A George IV tortoiseshell and gold snuff box with Roman micromosaic.
The micromosaic attributed to Luigi Moglia (1813-1878) depicting ‘Tawny’ the 6th Duke of Devonshire’s spaniel, the rectangular micromoasic panel on the cover depicting the black and brown spaniel lying with head up facing to the left, in a grassy landscape with bluish hills far left and trees beyond, right, gold lappet border, the box with slightly rounded corners.
The micromosaic composition is based on a painting by Johann Wenzel Peter of ‘Tawny’, a spaniel belonging to William, 6th Duke of Devonshire, who had journeyed to Italy in 1819. Although the painting was sent to England, Peter evidently kept studies which were subsequently used by several Roman mosaicists as compositional source.

Dimension of the micromosaic cm 4x6 - the box cm 5,5x8x2h
