Jaques Stella: Painter and engraver (Lyon 1596 - Paris 1657). Was a pupil of his father François, a painter of Flemish origin (d. Lyons 1605). In Florence (1619-23) Jaques worked for Cosimo II de' Medici especially as an engraver, in the manner of J. Callot. After a long stay in Rome (1623-34), he worked for the court of Paris and for churches in Lyon and the provinces, also enjoying success for his small paintings on precious stones or marbles. The influence of N. Poussin, with whom he had formed a profound friendship in Rome, dominates his mature works.
