In 1928, Max LE VERRIER sculpted his famous « CLARTE », the woman with a ball, taking back the idea of an antique goddess of light, symbolizing that time with a boyish hairstyle but also by the sedateness of her figure.

He sculpted CLARTE in his little atelier from a live model : in fact he needed 3 different models : one for the head, another one for the chest and one for the legs. For this last part he asked a black American woman playing in JOSEPHINE BAKER’s ballets to pose.
